While most people are aware that there is some difference between perfume and cologne, not many of them know exactly what those differences are.  To help you understand more about perfumes and colognes, as well as the differences between them, the following tips have been highlighted.  When you are done, you will be able to make informed purchases, depending on what your desires are for a fragrance.

In the majority of cases, a cologne only comes with one layer, which makes it single scented.  Where perfumes are concerned, there are generally three layers of fragrances referred to as notes.  These notes – top notes, middle notes and base notes – form three layers of scents to give the perfume more interest.

Colognes generally come in a spray form, however it is also possible to get the splash on versions.  This is especially true for men’s colognes.  However you do not generally find the splash on versions of perfumes.  Another difference between the two products is the level of concentration of essential oils.  Perfume actually contains the highest concentration of essential oil, rounding out between 15% and 40%.  Cologne actually contains the lowest concentration, anywhere between 5% and 8%.

Perfume & cologne will generally vary in place, mainly because of how concentrated the essential oils are.  Obviously because perfume has the highest concentration, it is generally pricier than a cologne.

And because of this concentration, perfume will always last longer than cologne.  By spraying just a little onto your pulse points, you can maintain that scent for up to 8 hours.  With a cologne, you would need to reapply every two hours.

Those are the basic differences between perfume and cologne.  You can now use this information to help you determine which products to buy and which ones to use depending on the kind of effect you are hoping to get.
